The challenges posed by climate change to the long-term sustainability of the UK food system are significant and complex. The food system itself is also complex, with many different organisations involved across the sector. Adapting to climate change will require the commitment of all. No single activity will address these problems – a range of mitigation and adaptation activities across industry and government will be required to create meaningful change.

As a food system regulator, the FSA recognises it has a key role to play in addressing these risks, including through supporting businesses to adapt to climate change, generating a range of evidence, and supporting cross-government adaptation activity. This report highlights several steps the FSA has taken in this space, in line with its strategic ambition to grow its contribution to food that is healthier and more sustainable.

The FSA recognises, however, that more needs to be done and that a coordinated approach will have the greatest impact. It welcomes the opportunity to work with others across government and industry to understand and develop a holistic approach towards tackling the risks that climate change poses to the food system. Defra’s upcoming food strategy provides an opportunity to do this.
