Grace Foods withdraws coconut milk powder
Tuesday 16 February 2010
Grace Foods has withdrawn packs of its own-brand coconut milk powder, because the product contains milk, which is mentioned in the ingredients list only as sodium caseinate without additional reference to 'milk'.
This makes the product a possible health risk for anyone who is allergic to or intolerant of milk. The Agency has issued an Allergy Alert. Anyone with an allergy to or intolerance of milk is advised not to eat or drink this product.
Product details
The product being withdrawn is:
- Brand: Grace
- Product name: Coconut Milk powder (the product name also appears in Spanish as ‘Leche de Coco en polvo’)
- Sizes: Individual 50g foil sachets and multi-packs containing three 50g foil sachets
- Batch number: B/NO: 52619R
- Best before: April 2011
The product is a powder to be mixed with water before use.
Grace Foods has supplied this product to the UK market since October 2009. The company is voluntarily withdrawing the product from sale and will place a sticker that shows that the product contains milk over the incorrect ingredients list on each packet. The relevant allergy support organisations have been contacted, and they will tell their members that milk has been found in the product.
No other Grace Foods products are known to be affected.
Allergy alerts
Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.
In such situations the Agency will issue an Allergy Alert. It is also possible to subscribe to an email alert system to receive automatic messages whenever Allergy Alerts are issued. Click on 'Get alerts' in the box at the bottom of this page to find more details.
You can get details of all the latest allergy alerts as soon as they're issued by getting the details sent as a SMS text message direct to your mobile phone.
To sign up to this free service, simply send the text message ‘START ALLERGY’ to the number 62372. To unsubscribe, just text 'STOP ALLERGY' to the same number.
