EFSA opinion on health claims published

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published its second batch of opinions on a wide variety of health claims submitted by food businesses from across the UK and other EU member states.
The European Commission and member states will take into account EFSA's opinions when they decide whether to authorise the claims for use on food. Rules will then be developed that will determine which terms will be included in a final list of permitted EU health claims.
The Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation requires that a list is developed that includes all the health claims that are allowed to be used in the European Union. This aims to help protect consumers.
Background
There are a number of health claims made on products in the UK. Currently, all claims made by manufacturers on products must be true and not misleading to the consumer. The Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation will provide assurance to consumers that any health claim a product makes is true and based on sound, substantiated science.
