Review of research linking diet and behaviour in children
Tuesday 20 June 2006
The Agency is currently conducting a systematic review of research looking at the effect of nutrition and diet on performance and behaviour of children in schools.
As part of the review, studies that have used omega 3 and 6 fish oil supplements in schools will also be looked at.
The FSA review aims to ensure our advice on food issues continues to be evidence based. When the review has been completed, we will publicise the findings.
Although the review was not commissioned by the Department for Education and Skill (DfES), both it and the School Food Trust, plus the education departments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, may wish to consider any future implications of the findings in relation to food served in school.
Current oily fish advice
Oily fish should be eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet. Oily fish is the best source of omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have been shown to help protect against coronary heart disease.
There has also been some research suggesting other health benefits for omega 3 fatty acids. But no clear conclusions can be drawn for these, including the association of all aspects of diet and performance in children.
