Subject: The Food Standards Agency agreed to commission a report on nutritional analysis of the NHS Better Hospital Food Flexi Menu pilot; which took place in 2005. The aim of this analysis was to provide information that would enable the Agency to advise on whether the Flexi Menu provides patients with appropriate nutrients. In addition; the analysis provides additional data to enable the Agency to take forward work on nutritional standards in this setting. The nutritional analysis indicates that; given the characteristics and situation of this population sub-group; average intakes of many of the nutrients are within an acceptable range. The nutrients of most concern are saturated fat and salt; where action to reduce intakes would be advisable. Consideration should also be given to ways in which intakes of dietary fibre could be increased.
