Food Champion Awards
The Agency awards Food Champion Awards to local authorities to acknowledge the important role they play in their local community and the good practice they have demonstrated. The awards recognise how local authorities have focused on improving food safety and community diet and nutrition in their area.
Awards 2010
Norfolk County Council and Newcastle-under-Lyme Council, in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, have been announced as the winners of this year's Food Champion awards.
Norfolk County Council's work developing new ways of reducing the amount of salt in bread and sausages was recognised as an outstanding example of improving community diet and nutrition. This is part of a wider initiative to raise awareness of health issues and show how local food producers can make a difference.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Council and Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been recognised for their success in improving local food safety. Inspired by the FSA’s Safer Food, Better Business, the authorities held practical food safety workshops for 370 takeaway and food outlets. The workshops were tailored to different cuisines and used interpreters to overcome any language difficulties.
Full details of all the shortlisted projects will be available on the website soon.
Details of all entries for this years awards are available at the Food Vision website.
Background
Launched in October 2007, the awards aim to complement local government good practice awards, and build on the experience of the Agency’s existing awards scheme for community-based good practice – the Sheila McKechnie Awards, which recognises community groups’ achievements.
The Agency developed the Food Champion Awards with its partners; the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Trading Standards Institute, the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services and the Improvement and Development Agency.
