Stirling council has a population of 85,220. The main population centre is the greater Stirling area, incorporating the old town, but much of the area is rural with many small towns and villages scattered throughout the council's 848 square mile area.
Tourism and leisure are major employers, and the number of food premises has grown consistently over the years. In 2002 there were 1453 registered food premises.
There are 440 farms and agricultural premises within Stirling Council of which 221 are registered or approved under the Feedingstuffs (Establishments and Intermediaries) Regulations 1999.
The food service is based at the Municipal Buildings, Corn Exchange Road, Stirling. Office hours are 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday with one Officer on duty for food emergencies during weekends and public holidays.
Officers will also be on duty outwith normal office hours on occasions where the opening hours of a premises requires it e.g. takeaway premises which only open in the evening, and outdoor events held during the weekend.
The Food Safety Service under the Food Safety Manager enforces food safety and food standards legislation. The Trading Standards Service under the Trading Standards Manager enforces feedingstuffs legislation.

Food & Food Premises Complaints - The Authority does not consistently investigate food complaints in accordance with its policy and procedure.
