Scottish Borders Council covers an area of 4,731 square kilometres, has a population of 106,300, and is the third least populated area in Scotland. There are 17 towns with a population of between 16,000 and 1,000, and 38 villages or settlements with an average population of 300. The area is predominantly rural with forestry, farming and fishing. Traditional textile industries have been augmented by new technology businesses.

The Authority’s Strengths
Service Plan - A Service Plan has been produced which meets the requirements of the standard.
Complaints Against the Service - A policy and procedure is in place.
Food and Feedingstuffs Premises Inspections - The Authority has a feedingstuffs inspection programme in place for 2003/2004.
Feedingstuffs Sampling - The Authority has been carrying out feedingstuffs sampling in accordance with its programme.
Follow-Up Action to Year 2 Non-Conformances - These have been completed and the audit file is due to be formally closed.
Areas for Improvement
Facilities & Equipment - The Authority needs to review and adhere to its procedure for equipment, maintenance and calibration.
Food & Food Premises Complaints - These have been followed up in accordance with the Authority’s procedure, however the records do not always indicate if the complaint has been closed off.
