Purbeck District Council was selected for audit because a high level of inspection activity was reported in 2000.
This had been maintained and was verified at the time of audit. The Authority was able to demonstrate an effective service and a high standard of performance in most of its activities. The Authority was particularly strong on investigative work relating to complaints about food items and food premises. The Authority demonstrated a strong emphasis on supporting and assisting local businesses. This was particularly noteworthy for a relatively small team.
The Authority’s Strengths:
Complaint Investigation
Food and food premises complaints were very thoroughly investigated and appropriate follow up action had been taken, and recorded in detail, in all cases examined.
Food Hygiene Inspection Programme
The inspection programme had been managed effectively to ensure that inspections were being carried out at the minimum frequencies according to risk. It was clear that this had been the case for a considerable number of years.
Advice to Business
The Authority was proactive in this area and had carried out a wide range of initiatives aimed at helping businesses to comply with food legislation.
