The Authority was achieving a high level of compliance with the Standard across most areas of food enforcement activity.
In addition to the 3 specific strengths that have been identified, the Service was also able to demonstrate that butchers’ shop licensing assessments were detailed and well documented, investigative work was thorough and the Home Authority Principle was actively pursued in practice.
Historically, the Authority’s Approved Premises were not inspected in full accordance with the relevant regulations and guidance, but measures had begun to be taken to address this issue.
The Authority's Strengths
Food hazard warnings
The Service’s response to food hazard warnings issued by the Agency was thorough and well documented. As a matter of routine, relevant local businesses were checked and appropriate information was disseminated through press releases and mailshots.
Training
The Authority’s approach to training had ensured that individual and Team training needs were identified. It was evident that an appropriate range of relevant training had been provided for food enforcement officers.
Advice to business
A range of useful proactive initiatives was being undertaken to help local food businesses comply with food law.
Key Area for Improvement
Approved Premises
It could not be confirmed that premises had been inspected and approved in accordance with the relevant regulations and official guidance. Although the Authority had only a limited number of such premises and improvements were in hand, it is important that the Service implements its new procedures to ensure that these businesses are in full compliance with the relevant legislation.
